How is human scabies or scabies cured?
Scabies is cured with a treatment that consists of applying a prescription medicine that kills the mites and their eggs, called a "scabicide." Scabicide usually comes as a cream or lotion. You should rub the scabies cream all over your body from your neck to your toes and wash it off after a few hours.

Sometimes your nurse or doctor may prescribe a pill to take instead of the cream. Be sure to follow your doctor's instructions and the instructions that come on the package.

What should I do to cure human scabies?

To cure human scabies (scabies), in addition to using or taking the medication, wash or dry clean all your bedding and towels. Also, dry clean or thoroughly launder the clothing you wore while you had scabies. Wash everything with the hottest water possible and dry on high heat for at least 20 minutes.

You can keep clothes that cannot be washed - and that may be infected - in a completely sealed plastic bag for at least three days so that the mites and eggs die. It's also a good idea to vacuum any rugs and furniture that infected people may have used (throw away the vacuum bag after doing so). You don't need to call an exterminator or fumigate your house.

If you have had scabies, tell your sexual partners and everyone you have had close contact with. You all need to be treated at the same time so you don't re-infect each other. Do not have sex or any other type of intimate contact until you finish treatment.

It's normal to continue to itch for 2-3 weeks after your treatment, even if it worked and the scabies has healed. If you continue to itch for longer than that or notice new rashes, lines, or furrows, you may need to repeat the treatment.

How long does it take for human scabies to heal?

Human scabies (scabies) usually clears up as soon as you finish treatment. However, depending on how severe your scabies outbreak is, you may need to be treated again. You will also have to repeat the treatment if new furrows (lines) and/or rashes appear.

It's normal to be itchy for 2-3 weeks after your treatment, even if it worked and your scabies have healed. If the itching lasts longer than that, or if you notice new rashes or furrows, contact your nurse or doctor.

Are there home remedies for human scabies?

No. To cure human scabies (scabies) you need a medicine prescribed by a doctor. Some home remedies and over-the-counter (non-prescription) products can help with itching and discomfort, but they won't kill the mites or cure the infection.
